ENERO 2002 ACTIVIDADES CULTURALES

Cine y Novela:

In recent years, many films have been created after a novel written by classical writers or contemporary newcomers. Some may say this may be the downfall with regards to creativity on the filmmaker's side but hasn't this always been the case? If so, are the movies based on novels less "cinematographic" compared to the ones based on original scripts? At the Instituto Cervantes, we aim to explore the connections between novels and movies to find out about the nature of such creative marriages. All movies are subtitled in English and will be screened at 5 p.m. at the Salón de Actos, Instituto Cervantes.

JAN 5 Una mujer sin amor ( A woman without love, 1951)
Directed by Luis Buñuel and based on a novel by Guy de Maupassant, this film tells of a woman who after indulging in an affair with a man she truly loves, returns to her young son and husband for good, and loses contact with the man. Her husband is unaware of the affair. Twenty years later, there is news that the man has died and left all of his money to her younger son in the family, which leads us to question this younger son's biological origin...

JAN 12 Yo soy el que tú buscas (I am who you are looking for, 1988)
Based on a story by Gabriel García Marquez and directed by Jaime Chávarri, this film tells of Natalia, a fashion model, who is assaulted by a man one night as she is returning from work. The plot of the story comes as she decides to take revenge, and obsessively searches for the rapist.

JAN 19 Tiempo de Silencio (Time of Silence, 1986)

For the purpose of making known the valuable collection of the UST Rare Books and hopefully, that they may be put into maximum use, the idea of a catalogue was conceived. THESIS and OPEN YOUR EYES by Alejandro Amenabar, one of the most promising filmmakers from Spain.
BATTLE ROYALE by Kinji Fukusaku

THESIS (TESIS) is the 1996 Best Picture Goya (Spanish Oscar) winner. It’s a psychological thriller about why many people are fascinated by violence. On the other hand, Hollywood remade OPEN YOUR EYES (ABRE LOS OJOS) - VANILLA SKY, which will be shown here on February 6. This is your chance to find out if both the original and remake are good or poles apart. Penelope Cruz stars in both versions.

The final feature will be BATTLE ROYALE(courtesy of Joey Fernandez) by Kinji Fukusaku. This Japanese film, which was released last year, is about a class that
was randomly picked to be in an unspecified, deserted isle. The mission is only one of the 42 students will survive and it can only be achieved by killing each other. The movie is very violent, defies logic and is filled with black humor (like Stanley Kubrick’s A CLOCKWORK ORANGE).
