As Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette are fleeing Revolutionary Paris to
join monarchist allies outside of France, a stagecoach travels the
same route. The passengers include American patriot Thomas Paine,
noted seducer Casanova, French novelist Restif de la Bretonne and one
of the Queen's ladies-in-waiting. They discuss philosophy and
politics and reflect on the momentous changes taking place until
their arrival in Varennes to witness the arrest of the King and bid
farewell to an era.
